Elle Fanning Takes Aim at the Predator Franchise in Upcoming ‘Badlands’

Get ready for another thrilling chapter in the Predator universe! While we’re eagerly awaiting the arrival of “Alien: Romulus” later this year, the iconic “Predator” franchise is gearing up for its own comeback. Following the massive success of Dan Trachtenberg’s “Prey” in 2022, which took us back to the heart-pounding action of colonial America, anticipation has been high for the next installment. The wait is almost over, folks! We finally have news about who’s leading the charge in Trachtenberg’s newest Predator venture, “Badlands.”

Drumroll, please… Deadline reports that the incredibly talented Elle Fanning is in talks to star! This would be her first foray into leading a major blockbuster, and I for one am here for it. Fanning is known for her captivating performances in indie darlings like “The Neon Demon” and “20th Century Women,” as well as her breakout role in J.J. Abrams’ “Super 8.” This seems like a natural next step for Fanning, returning to the world of sci-fi with a director known for revitalizing franchises.

After the success of “Prey,” it’s no surprise the creative team was looking for a more established name, and Fanning definitely fits the bill. Trachtenberg will be directing, working from a script he co-wrote with “Prey” screenwriter Patrick Aison. While additional casting details remain under wraps, the prospect of Fanning going toe-to-toe with the Predator is more than enough to pique our interest.

But wait, there’s more!

Deadline also dropped another exciting tidbit: a “Prey” sequel is officially in the works. That’s right, Amber Midthunder is expected to reprise her role as the fierce Comanche warrior, Naru. While this sequel is in the early stages of development with no official casting news (yet!), it’s a historic moment for the franchise. This would mark the first time a “Predator” sequel features the return of the same human protagonist. Previous films relied on the star power of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Danny Glover, Adrien Brody, and Boyd Holbrook, but it seems like Midthunder’s Naru has earned her place as a bonafide Predator slayer.

Details about the “Prey” sequel are scarce, but Trachtenberg has hinted at ideas for potential sequels in previous interviews. Will any of those concepts make it into the upcoming film? Only time will tell.

Now, back to “Badlands.” The big question on everyone’s mind is whether it will follow “Prey’s” footsteps with a streaming release on Hulu or make a grand return to the big screen. While “Prey” found a huge audience at home, recent trends suggest a theatrical release for “Badlands” might be in the cards. “Alien: Romulus” recently shifted back to a theatrical release after being initially slated for streaming. This could be a good sign for “Badlands” and future installments, especially considering the franchise’s legacy.

One thing’s for sure: the future of the “Predator” franchise is looking bright. With a talented new lead in “Badlands,” the return of Amber Midthunder in a groundbreaking sequel, and a creative team dedicated to honoring the franchise’s legacy while pushing boundaries, we’re in for a wild ride.
